Unidentified Object Spotted in San Diego Sky Identified as SpaceX Rocket Launch
Recent social media reports of an unidentified object streaking through the San Diego sky have been confirmed as a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The launch, which occurred on June 16, 2025, created a spectacular visual display visible across Southern California, including San Diego and Los Angeles.
According to AccuWeather, the rocket launch produced a distinctive “jellyfish cloud” formation in the night sky—a phenomenon caused by the rocket’s exhaust plume interacting with high-altitude atmospheric conditions. The unusual shape led many observers to initially mistake the event for a UFO or other unexplained aerial activity.
The Falcon 9 rocket carried 26 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit, lifting off at approximately 8:36 p.m. PDT from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County. Footage of the launch was captured from multiple locations, including San Diego’s College Grove Center, and widely shared on social media platforms.
This launch follows a pattern of SpaceX missions from Vandenberg that have previously generated public attention due to their vivid visual effects. In September 2023, a similar launch by Firefly Aerospace under the U.S. Space Force’s Victus Nox mission was observed across Southern California, Arizona, and Las Vegas, with the National Weather Service in Las Vegas and a Phoenix news station reporting sightings of the exhaust trail.
SpaceX has conducted numerous Falcon 9 launches from Vandenberg in recent years as part of its Starlink satellite constellation deployment. These missions are routinely coordinated with federal aviation and space authorities and are not classified or experimental in nature.
While the sudden appearance of bright lights and unusual cloud formations in the sky can understandably cause public curiosity, officials confirm that such events are predictable outcomes of scheduled rocket launches. Authorities encourage the public to consult official launch tracking resources for accurate information about upcoming spaceflight activities.
As space launches become more frequent, particularly along California’s Central Coast, similar sightings are likely to occur. Public awareness campaigns by space agencies and aerospace companies aim to reduce confusion and promote understanding of these routine operations.
