Manchester United fans overwhelmingly favor a brand-new stadium over redeveloping Old Trafford, according to a recent survey.

The survey, conducted among over 50,000 season ticket holders, members, and executive club members, revealed that 52% prefer a fresh start with a new stadium, compared to 31% who support renovating the existing ground. A significant 17% remain undecided.

These findings come as Manchester United’s owners explore future stadium plans alongside the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force. This influential group includes notable figures like former United defender Gary Neville, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, and World Athletics president Seb Coe.

While an “options report” outlining various possibilities is expected from the task force by the end of the year, sources suggest the focus has been on constructing a modern, 100,000-capacity stadium rather than refurbishing Old Trafford.

Interestingly, the survey revealed a generational divide in fan opinion. Newer season ticket holders expressed the strongest support for a new stadium, and positive sentiment towards a new build increased with age.

Rick McGagh, Manchester United’s director of fan engagement, emphasized the importance of fan input in shaping the club’s future.

“We are delighted that this survey received the most responses in the club’s history. It shows how important this work is, and to have this level of engagement at this stage is a really positive place to start,” McGagh stated. “We know how important our home is to fans and we need to listen to them and gain all their views and insights in order to develop the world-class stadium they deserve.”

McGagh further highlighted the value of analyzing the survey data through various lenses, noting, “We are able to view the results through different lenses to understand if our season ticket holders feel differently about anything than say our official members. And if younger fans have different views to older fans. This insight is incredibly helpful and allows the project team to understand the differences as well as the commonality in our fanbase.”

To facilitate further dialogue, Manchester United is hosting “Town Hall” sessions at Old Trafford on Tuesday and Wednesday, providing fans with an opportunity to learn more about the proposed options and plans.
