Israel Bans UNRWA Operations Amidst Palestinian Refugee Crisis

The UN agency providing vital aid to millions of Palestinian refugees, UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), is facing an unprecedented crisis. Israel has officially banned UNRWA’s activities within its borders, effectively shutting down its operations in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, effective Thursday.

The Israeli Knesset passed legislation to halt UNRWA’s operations, forcing the agency to evacuate its headquarters in East Jerusalem. Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon notified the UN of the decision, stating, “Within 48 hours, the State of Israel will cease its cooperation with UNRWA. UNRWA must cease its activities and evacuate all its facilities in Jerusalem.”

This dramatic move follows years of mounting Israeli criticism of UNRWA, with officials accusing it of perpetuating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and, more recently, alleging ties to Hamas. However, no concrete evidence has been presented to substantiate these claims.

UNRWA, established in 1949 to support Palestinian refugees displaced during the creation of Israel, has been a lifeline for millions. The agency operates 300 premises and employs 13,000 personnel in Gaza alone, providing essential services such as education, healthcare, and food aid. Its closure threatens to cripple humanitarian efforts in the region, particularly in Gaza, where the population is already grappling with severe economic and social challenges.

UNRWA Chief Philippe Lazzarini has vehemently denied the accusations of Hamas ties, warning that shutting down the agency would have devastating consequences. He issued a powerful statement to the UN Security Council, emphasizing that millions of Palestinians hang in the balance: "The [Israeli] political attacks on the agency are motivated by the desire to strip Palestinians of their refugee status, thereby unilaterally changing the long-established parameters for a political solution. The objective is to deny Palestine refugees the right to self-determination and erase their history and identity."

Lazzarini’s statement underscores the gravity of the situation, highlighting the agency’s role in maintaining stability and providing a safety net for millions.

The potential shutdown of UNRWA coincides with a fragile ceasefire agreement and the imminent release of three Israeli hostages held by Hamas. This adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Egypt and Jordan should take in Palestinians from Gaza. "Regarding what is being said about the displacement of Palestinians, it can never be allowed because of its impact on Egyptian national security," Sisi stated. "Deportation or displacement of the Palestinian people is an injustice in which we cannot participate.”

The UNRWA crisis is a humanitarian and political earthquake with far-reaching consequences. The implications of this decision are still unfolding, but one thing is clear: millions of Palestinians are facing an uncertain future. The international community must act swiftly to address this unfolding crisis and prevent a humanitatian disaster.
