“Upper Austria is Cycling” Campaign Kicks Off, Encouraging Residents to Choose Bikes
With the arrival of spring, the “Upper Austria is Cycling” campaign has launched for another year, inviting residents to prioritize cycling for everyday journeys. Running from March 20th to September 30th, 2026, the initiative aims to increase bicycle usage and promote a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.
Promoting Health and Sustainable Transportation
The campaign highlights the health benefits of cycling and its contribution to more livable cities and communities. Organizers emphasize the bicycle as a practical alternative to cars, particularly for shorter distances. “With the ‘Upper Austria cycles’ campaign, we want to motivate as many people as possible to use their bikes more often in everyday life – for example on the way to work, school or shopping,” says Mobility Provincial Councilor Günther Steinkellner.
Increased Participation in 2025
Last year’s campaign saw a significant increase in participation, with a 34 percent rise in cyclists – totaling 7,645 people – who collectively cycled over 6.8 million kilometers. Organizers aim to build on this success in 2026 and encourage even greater involvement.
Prizes and Participation
Participants who register and log their kilometers are eligible to win a range of prizes, including e-bikes, bicycles, folding bikes, cycling accessories, wellness vouchers, and hotel stays. The campaign welcomes participation from individuals, communities, companies, clubs, schools, and universities. Kilometers can be recorded using the “Austria cycles” app or entered online. Participation is free.
New School Trip Recording System
A new partnership with BIKEline introduces a streamlined system for schools to record cycling trips. Students will check in at a terminal using an electronic helmet sticker, automatically registering their journeys and assigning them to the respective school. This eliminates manual kilometer entry and reduces the administrative burden on teachers.
