Ulysse Nardin and URWERK Unveil the UR-FREAK: A New Standard in Watch Collaboration

In a watch industry often characterized by cautious partnerships, Ulysse Nardin and URWERK have launched a collaboration that transcends typical brand co-branding. Unveiled at Dubai Watch Week, the UR-FREAK represents a fusion of these two independent watchmakers, a collaboration many believe was long overdue. The watch is described as a kinetic sculpture where mechanics dictate design.

A Fusion of Disruptive Concepts

The UR-FREAK is a technical synthesis of two groundbreaking concepts in modern horology: the Ulysse Nardin Freak and the URWERK wandering hour satellite indication. The entire movement rotates once every three hours. At its center, a large silicon balance wheel – 25 percent larger than standard – oscillates, serving as the visual and functional heart of the display. Orbiting this are satellite arms, carrying rotating hour blocks that move along a minute scale, a signature URWERK time-telling method now powered by Ulysse Nardin’s carousel.

Historical Roots of the Collaboration

The origins of this 2025 partnership trace back to the late 1990s. URWERK was founded by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei in 1997, while Ulysse Nardin, under the leadership of Rolf Schnyder, was preparing to launch the original Freak in 2001. Both brands established their identities on a commitment to independence – the freedom to explore radical mechanics without adhering to traditional norms.

A Technical, Not Cosmetic, Collaboration

This collaboration was designed as a “technical collaboration” rather than a purely aesthetic one. The UR-FREAK required the development of an entirely new engine: the Calibre UN-241. The goal was to integrate URWERK’s three-armed wandering hour satellite system onto Ulysse Nardin’s rotating Freak carousel, necessitating the creation of over 150 new components to ensure compatibility.

Design and Features

The UR-FREAK’s physical design utilizes the chassis of the Ulysse Nardin Freak ONE, but its exterior is distinctly URWERK. The case is finished in a deep anthracite grey, evoking an industrial aesthetic. Slashes of “Electric Yellow” (Pantone 395 C) – a color strongly associated with URWERK’s displays – highlight the minute markers and the tip of the wandering hour hand. Like its Freak predecessors, the watch has no crown. Time is set by rotating the bezel and the mainspring is wound by turning the caseback, although the efficient “Grinder” automatic winding system ensures a 90-hour power reserve with wrist movement.

Technical Specifications

The UR-FREAK is housed in a 44-millimeter sandblasted titanium case, 12 millimeters in height, and is water-resistant to 30 meters. The watch is a limited and numbered edition of 100 pieces.
