US-Israeli War with Iran: Duration, Goals, and Origins
The US-Israeli war with Iran began on Saturday, and initial reactions from US and Israeli officials have begun to clarify the conflict’s potential duration, objectives, and the factors leading to its commencement. This analysis synthesizes statements from key figures, including President Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Projected War Duration
Predictions regarding the war’s length vary. President Trump initially suggested a potential duration of four to five weeks, with an original plan to destroy Iran’s military leadership within four weeks. However, he noted that operations were “ahead of schedule.” Axios reports that this timeline originated from a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio refrained from providing a specific timeframe, stating that the US would continue operations “for as long as it takes to achieve those goals.” Similarly, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated the war would not be “endless” but avoided concrete predictions. Prime Minister Netanyahu echoed this sentiment, stating, “It will not be an endless war.”
Trump further emphasized the initial phase of the conflict, stating, “We haven’t even begun to attack in earnest yet. The big wave isn’t here yet. The big wave will be here soon.”
Ground Operation Possibility
Currently, military actions are limited to airstrikes. Defense Secretary Hegseth stated there are no plans for a ground operation “But we’re not going to get into any discussions about what we will or won’t do in the future.” Trump acknowledged the possibility of ground troops but expressed a belief that objectives could be achieved without them. Rubio concurred, stating the US believed the campaign’s goals were attainable without a ground invasion.
War Objectives
The primary stated goal, as articulated by President Trump, is the destruction of Iran’s nuclear program: “They will never have nuclear weapons.” Trump also called for regime change, urging the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to disarm and encouraging Iranians to “overthrow the government when we’re done.”
However, Trump administration officials have adopted a more cautious stance on regime change. Rubio indicated that even as the US hopes for a democratic transition, it is not the primary objective. He clarified that the operation’s main purpose is to “destroy their missile and naval capabilities,” a sentiment echoed by Secretary Hegseth.
US Vice President J.D. Vance emphasized the administration’s intention to avoid a prolonged, aimless conflict, stating that Trump “will absolutely not allow the United States to get involved in a multi-year conflict that has no end in sight and no clear goals.”
Reasons for the Current Conflict
Prior to the strikes on Iran, three rounds of talks were held in Geneva, mediated by Oman. However, Trump did not mention these negotiations in his initial address. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff reported that, by the end of the second round, it became clear that an agreement was unattainable.
Secretary of State Rubio stated that Israel was planning an attack regardless, and that the US would have suffered significant losses if it hadn’t joined preemptively. He explained, “First of all, it was absolutely clear that if Iran was attacked by anyone…they would respond and that the retaliation would be against the United States…We knew that Israel would act…and we knew that if we did not strike pre-emptively, we would suffer more casualties.”
Netanyahu dismissed the notion that Israel had drawn the US into the war, asserting that Trump was acting on his own judgment: “Trump should not be dragged anywhere. He is doing what he thinks is right, and it is right.” Reuters highlights the close alliance between Netanyahu and Trump as a key factor in the current situation.
