US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Discovers Piedmontese Roots During Italy Visit
In a significant personal and diplomatic moment, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has uncovered deep ancestral ties to Italy. During his visit to the country, Rubio was presented with official documentation tracing his family’s origins to the Piedmont region, bridging his American identity with a long-forgotten European heritage.
Uncovering Ancestry in Casale Monferrato
The discovery was made possible through extensive research conducted in the municipal and diocesan archives of Casale Monferrato. During a meeting at the Farnesina—Italy’s foreign ministry—Rubio received a detailed family tree and historical documents collected by the Mayor of Casale Monferrato, Emanuele Capra.
The genealogical research reveals a lineage that extends back centuries. While the municipal archives provide records dating back to 1860, the family tree traces Rubio’s closest ancestors to the end of the 18th century. A key find in the diocesan archives identified a specific ancestor, Caterina Ioane (also registered as Caterina De Ioane), whose baptism and funeral were both celebrated in the local cathedral.
A Connection to the Birth of Italy
The presentation of these documents was a joint effort involving high-ranking Italian officials, including Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Alberto Cirio, the President of the Piedmont Region. For the local leaders, the discovery is more than a genealogical curiosity; it is a symbol of the enduring bond between the region and the United States.
“The history of Piedmont is the history of Italy, because Piedmont is the region where Italy was born and our regional capital was the first Italian capital,” Cirio told Rubio. He added that discovering the Secretary of State’s Piedmontese origins was “wonderful news,” noting that the bond of friendship and gratitude Piedmont shares with the United States is strong.
A Personal Connection to the Past
Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, reacted warmly to the findings. After thanking the Italian authorities in English and speaking briefly in Spanish, he expressed a deep personal interest in exploring these newly discovered roots.

“It’s a special moment to receive all this information and it’s an incredible experience and one more reason to return soon, visit the Region, get to know it and connect with the past,” Rubio stated.
Following the presentation, Mayor Emanuele Capra extended a formal invitation for the Secretary of State to visit Casale Monferrato in person to further explore the town where his ancestors once lived.
