US and Ecuador Launch Joint Operation Against Drug Trafficking

US and Ecuadorian forces have initiated joint operations targeting designated terrorist organizations in Ecuador, marking a new phase in the country’s fight against drug trafficking. The operations, announced Tuesday, aim to dismantle illicit drug networks and address the growing issue of narco-terrorism in the region.

Expanding Collaboration to Combat Narco-Terrorism

The announcement follows a statement by Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Monday, indicating that the US was among “regional allies” participating in a renewed effort to combat drug cartels . The joint operations focus on tackling illicit drug trafficking, though specific details remain classified .

Ecuador as a Key Transit Point for Cocaine

President Noboa has stated that approximately 70% of the world’s cocaine now transits through Ecuador’s ports, making it a lucrative hub for drug-trafficking gangs. Ecuador’s geographical location, bordering the world’s two largest cocaine producers – Colombia and Peru – further exacerbates the issue .

Recent Developments and US Involvement

These operations come four months after Ecuadorians voted against allowing the return of foreign military bases to the country, a setback for President Noboa’s efforts to strengthen security cooperation with the US . Noboa, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has prioritized fighting organized crime and reducing escalating violence.

Prior to the launch of joint operations, Noboa held discussions with US Southern Command chief Francis Donovan and Mark Schafer, head of US Special Operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean, focusing on information sharing and operational coordination at airports and seaports .

US Southern Command’s Response

US Southern Command stated, “Together, we are taking decisive action to confront narco-terrorists who have long inflicted terror, violence, and corruption on citizens throughout the hemisphere” . A brief video of the operation, featuring helicopters, was released by the command .

Expanding US Anti-Drug Efforts

The operations in Ecuador appear to be an expansion of the Trump administration’s Operation Southern Spear, which has previously targeted alleged drug boats in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean, resulting in 151 fatalities . A recent US-military-led task force also played a role in the capture of Nemesio Oseguera, alias “El Mencho,” a major cartel leader in Mexico .

Ecuador’s Ministry of Defense has indicated that details of the offensive operations are classified .
