Kentucky Soldier Sgt. Benjamin Pennington Killed in Iran Conflict

Army Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington, 26, of Glendale, Kentucky, has died after sustaining injuries during an enemy attack in Saudi Arabia. His dignified transfer was held at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on March 9, 2026.

Details of Sgt. Pennington’s Service and Death

Sgt. Pennington joined the Army in 2017, initially serving as a unit supply specialist. He was later assigned to the 1st Space Battalion as part of the 1st Space Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado, last summer. He was recognized for his service with the Army Achievement Medal.

The Pentagon reported that Sgt. Pennington died on Sunday, March 9, after being injured during an attack seven days prior at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The incident is currently under investigation. He will be posthumously promoted to staff sergeant, according to the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC).

Casualties in the Iran Conflict

As of March 10, 2026, seven American service members have died in the conflict in Iran, which began after initial military strikes by the U.S. And Israel on February 28. Approximately 140 U.S. Service members have been wounded, with eight sustaining severe injuries. The majority of the wounded, 108, have already returned to duty.

The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life across the region, with at least 1,270 deaths reported in Iran and 486 in Lebanon, according to state media and the Lebanese health ministry, respectively. Retaliatory attacks around the Gulf have caused more than 20 deaths.

Reactions to Sgt. Pennington’s Death

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear mourned Sgt. Pennington’s death, calling him a hero and asking Kentuckians to pray for his family. Rep. Brett Guthrie as well issued a statement mourning the loss of Sgt. Pennington.
