USPS Announces Temporary Price Hike for Key Shipping Services
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has filed a notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) detailing a temporary price change designed to align transportation costs with current market rates. This adjustment, described as a “time-limited” measure, aims to ensure the USPS covers its operating costs, as mandated by Congress.
The USPS stated that the price increase will serve as a bridge to a more permanent pricing mechanism that reflects market conditions for competitive products, supporting the agency’s ability to fulfill its universal service obligation in a financially sustainable manner.
Price Increase Details
The planned 8 percent increase, approved by the USPS Governors on March 24, will affect base postage prices for the following retail and commercial domestic competitive products:
- Priority Mail Express
- Priority Mail
- USPS Ground Advantage
- Parcel Select
Notably, the price change will not affect First-Class Stamps or other products and services. If approved by the PRC, the fresh prices will take effect at midnight Central Time on April 26, 2026, and remain in place until midnight Central Time on January 17, 2027. The Postal Service will then evaluate whether a long-term pricing strategy is needed.
Addressing Rising Transportation Costs
According to the USPS, increasing transportation costs are a key driver of the price adjustment. While competitors have implemented surcharges, the USPS has avoided them, and this price change represents less than one-third of the fuel surcharges levied by competitors. Despite the increase, the USPS maintains it will continue to offer competitive shipping rates.
PRC Oversight and Further Information
The PRC will review the proposed price change before it goes into effect on April 26. Interested parties can find complete USPS price filings, including detailed price lists, on the PRC website’s Daily Listings section at prc.arkcase.com/portal/filings. Price tables are also available on the Postal Explorer website at pe.usps.com/PriceChange/Index.
The USPS emphasized that this time-limited price change aligns with industry practices and supports its public service mission of providing a nationwide delivery network six days a week in a cost-effective and sustainable manner, as intended by Congress.
