UTSA Sweeps South Dakota State in Season-Opening Baseball Series

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — UTSA completed a three-game sweep of South Dakota State with a decisive 13-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. The Roadrunners showcased a dominant offensive performance, scoring seven runs in the first inning and maintaining control throughout the game.

Roadrunners Explode in the First Inning

UTSA sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening frame, quickly establishing a significant lead. Caden Miller led off with a double and scored on a single by Lane Haworth. Jackrabbit starter Sam Novotny struggled with control, walking four batters, including Aidan Eshelman and Diego Diaz with the bases loaded, forcing in two runs. Brandon Bishop followed with a two-run single, and Miller capped the scoring with his second double of the inning, driving in Bishop.

UTSA Extends Lead in the Second

The Roadrunners continued their offensive onslaught in the second inning, adding four more runs – three of which were unearned. Josh Arquette drove in a run with an RBI double, and Diaz added a two-run triple before scoring on a wild pitch.

Jackrabbit Bullpen Shines, But Offense Struggles

South Dakota State’s bullpen managed to steady the ship after a rough start. Freshman Logan Campbell pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his collegiate debut, and Drew McDowell recorded four strikeouts in two shutout frames. Tristan Augedahl also registered four strikeouts across two innings of work, despite allowing runs.

SDSU’s Lone Run

The Jackrabbits’ only run came in the fifth inning when Luke Luskey hit a two-out triple and scored on a single by Jaren Vogt. SDSU threatened in the sixth but ended the inning on a double play.

Key Performers

Lane Haworth led UTSA’s 13-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Luke Luskey recorded two of South Dakota State’s nine hits and finished the series batting .455 (5-for-11). Owen Siegert also hit safely in all three games, posting a .364 average (4-for-11).

South Dakota State will remain in San Antonio to play a two-game mid-week series at Incarnate Word, with the first game scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m.
