Valladolid Leads Castilla y León in Gambling Addiction Treatment Cases, According to Regional Data

Valladolid, the capital of Castilla y León, reported the highest number of individuals initiating gambling addiction treatment in the region in 2025, according to the Sistema Autonómico de Información sobre Toxicomanías de Castilla y León (SAITCyL). A total of 97 patients began therapy during the year, representing over half of the 186 cases recorded across Castilla y León. This marks a decline from 112 treatments in 2024 but maintains Valladolid’s position as the province with the largest volume of gambling addiction cases.

Voluntary Treatment Rises, Highlighting Improved Awareness

The data reveals a shift in how individuals seek help. Nearly half (47.8%) of those starting treatment in 2025 did so voluntarily, compared to 30.4% in 2024. While family and friends still play a critical role—32.8% of patients sought help due to their influence—this trend suggests growing recognition of gambling addiction as a public health issue.

Historical Trends Show Fluctuations After Pandemic Surge

Castilla y León’s gambling addiction treatment numbers saw a sharp rise post-pandemic, peaking at 221 cases in 2023. The figure stabilized in 2024 with 207 cases and dipped slightly to 186 in 2025. SAITCyL attributes this moderation to increased awareness and earlier intervention efforts.

Demographics: A Predominantly Male, Working-Age Population

The majority of patients (94.6%) are men with an average age of 39.4 years. Seven out of ten individuals in treatment are employed and live with family, often with parents, partners, or children. These profiles challenge stereotypes, as experts note that addiction frequently affects individuals who are socially and economically integrated.

Online Gambling Emerges as a Growing Concern

While slot machines remain the primary source of addiction (45.2% of cases), online gambling is gaining traction. The 28% of cases linked to digital platforms, alongside 26.3% involving mixed formats, highlight a shift in risk factors. This trend raises concerns about younger demographics, as sports betting and online games increasingly attract minors.

Economic Impact Remains Severe

The average debt of patients at treatment initiation stood at 45,835 euros in 2025, down from 57,226 euros in 2024. Despite this reduction, the figures underscore the financial toll of gambling addiction, with many cases accumulating debts between 10,000 and 50,000 euros.
