Milan Secures Tirreno-Adriatico Stage Win as Del Toro Claims Overall Title
San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy – Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) claimed victory in the final stage of the 2026 Tirreno-Adriatico, a 143km bunch sprint, while Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) secured the overall general classification title. The seventh and final stage saw a challenging race marked by an early aggressive move from Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) and a late crash that impacted several sprinters.
Van der Poel’s Mid-Race Effort
The race was ignited early with a strong push from Mathieu van der Poel, who spent approximately 30 kilometers at the front of the peloton. This effort, widely interpreted as preparation for the upcoming Milan-San Remo race, splintered the field and forced the sprinters to expend significant energy to rejoin the lead group. Sam Welsford (Ineos Grenadiers) noted the difficulty, stating his team had to work hard to chase back after Van der Poel’s sustained attack.1
Chaotic Sprint Finish
Despite Van der Poel’s efforts, the stage ultimately culminated in a bunch sprint. Jonathan Milan emerged victorious, beating Sam Welsford and Laurenz Rex (Soudal Quick-Step) to the finish line. 2 The sprint was described as “crazy” and “messy” by Welsford, with riders vying for position on the narrow roads. 1
Late Crash Impacts Sprinters
A crash occurred with 2.6km remaining, taking out several riders including Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) and Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step). 3 Welsford narrowly avoided the incident, commenting on the inherent risks of such a crowded sprint finish. 1
Del Toro Secures Overall Victory
Isaac del Toro successfully defended his overall lead, finishing 40 seconds ahead of Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike) in the general classification. 3 Jorgenson moved into second place securing the position with bonus seconds. Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) finished third.
