Viterbo’s Colle del Duomo Selected as Top Film Friendly Location 2025

The monumental complex of the Colle del Duomo in Viterbo has been selected as one of the twelve winning locations in the “Film Friendly Location 2025” initiative. Promoted by the Fondazione Roma Lazio Film Commission, the program aims to elevate regional sites as destinations for international film and television productions through professional promotion and industry networking.

Strategic Promotion at Global Industry Markets

The inclusion of the Colle del Duomo—which features the historic Palazzo dei Papi—grants the site access to specialized marketing tools provided by the regional Film Commission. This support includes professional photographic mapping and direct representation at global industry events. According to official municipal statements, the location will be showcased at the Venice Production Bridge in September, the Shooting Locations Marketplace in Valladolid this October, and the FOCUS London event in December.

These platforms serve as hubs for the global audiovisual industry, connecting location managers and producers with the territories best suited for their projects. By integrating the Colle del Duomo into these international circuits, the initiative seeks to increase Viterbo’s visibility as a functional and historic set.

Integration with “Viterbo Città del Cinema”

The project was submitted under the “Viterbo Città del Cinema” initiative, a structure established within the Municipality. Mayor Chiara Frontini stated that the selection validates the city’s ongoing efforts to balance heritage conservation with modern economic development.

Patrizia Notaristefano, the assessor for the Film commission and città del cinema, noted that the designation serves as a strategic step in cementing Viterbo’s reputation as a production-ready city. The administration intends to use this recognition to attract audiovisual investments, emphasizing the site’s unique architectural context.

Next Steps for Viterbo’s Film Development

The Fondazione Roma Lazio Film Commission is scheduled to return to Viterbo on July 20 to conduct further site documentation at the Colle del Duomo. This follow-up work is part of a broader mandate to create professional “Fam Tours” (familiarization tours) for international location managers. These tours allow industry professionals to visit regional sites firsthand, a standard practice for securing filming contracts.

The “Film Friendly Location 2025” call was designed to address the demand for diverse, representative, and historically significant backdrops within the regional territory. With the selection finalized, the twelve winning locations will now function as a portfolio for the Commission’s ongoing recruitment of international production houses.
