Volkswagen Introduces 100 Sheep to Solar Farm in Poland for Agrivoltaics Research
Volkswagen has deployed 100 sheep at its solar farm in Poznań, Poland, to support a research project on agrivoltaics, a practice that combines agriculture and solar energy production.
Solar Farm Becomes a Biodiversity Hub
The solar farm, which powers Volkswagen’s manufacturing plant in Poznań, now serves a dual purpose beyond generating renewable energy. The sheep are part of a broader effort to explore sustainable land use. “Today, the photovoltaic farm delivers much more than green electricity. It has also become a place that supports biodiversity, local agriculture, and scientific research,” said Marzena Pillich-Grońska, director of Volkswagen Poznań.
The project aligns with growing interest in agrivoltaics, where solar panels and agricultural activities coexist. Research by Poznań University of Life Sciences will examine how grazing affects vegetation, animal welfare, and soil quality.
Industry Trends and Environmental Benefits
Agrivoltaics has gained traction as a solution to land-use conflicts between energy production and agriculture.

The sheep at the Poznań site are part of a research framework. “This project demonstrates that modern industry can work in harmony with nature,” Pillich-Grońska added. The university’s study will also assess the microclimate effects of grazing, a factor critical to understanding long-term environmental impacts.
