Essential Items for Your Dog's Emergency Kit

Winter weather emergencies require dedicated preparation for household pets, including a dedicated supply of food. According to a countryliving.com report, veterinarians and canine behaviorists recommend assembling these supplies gradually to avoid contributing to supermarket shortages while keeping pets safe during power outages.

Canned and Dried Foods for Winter Outages

Food tops the emergency checklist for household dogs during severe weather events. Unless a dog already eats a raw diet, owners typically have suitable food at home that keeps well.

“Regardless of normal diet, I’d have some backup options in the home that would not require refrigeration or freezing,” said Dr. Linda Simon, resident Vet at Pooch & Mutt, as reported by countryliving.com.

Stocking unfamiliar brands can create additional health complications during stressful periods. Adem Fehmi, a canine behaviorist at Rover.com, warned that suddenly changing a dog’s food can cause digestive upset when routines are already disrupted. Owners should maintain a supply of dry kibble and canned meat that matches the animal’s regular dietary requirements.

Keep medical supplies and extra medication ready for dogs

Medical preparedness forms a second critical pillar of pet disaster planning. Linda Simon recommends keeping a pet first-aid kit, which owners can either buy pre-made or assemble independently.

A proper kit includes gauze, sterile saline, latex gloves, alcohol wipes, and bandaging material to treat minor wounds or skin lesions at home. For dogs that take medication, owners need to keep enough on hand for a few days. Simon advised ensuring a bit extra is available in case there are a few days where you cannot reach their vet.

Sanitation Supplies and Battery-Powered Lighting

In extreme weather, it might not be possible to take your dog outside. Adem Fehmi recommends keeping extra poo bags and antibacterial cleaning supplies on hand to be prepared.

When power fails, lighting becomes an immediate safety priority. While torches are a useful addition to any emergency kit, Linda Simon emphasizes that battery-powered ones are preferred to open flames, like candles, in homes with pets.

Provide familiar comfort items for emotional reassurance during emergencies

Physical supplies address basic survival, but animals also require psychological reassurance during emergencies. Dogs can pick up on their owner’s anxiety.

“I would encourage owners to think about their dog’s emotional wellbeing,” Adem Fehmi said.

Familiar toys, blankets, and bedding carrying the scent of home can provide reassurance, particularly if their normal environment or routine changes unexpectedly.
