Volkswagen ID. Cross: Affordable Electric SUV Set to Launch in 2026
Volkswagen is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the ID. Cross, a new compact SUV positioned as one of the most affordable electric models in its range. While currently under camouflage, the ID. Cross is generating significant interest ahead of its official release later this year.
Performance and Range
Initial test drives indicate the ID. Cross offers a stable and mature driving experience, a key characteristic Volkswagen emphasizes for its new, more accessible electric vehicles. The model will be available with multiple power levels: 85 kW, 99 kW, and 155 kW (211 hp).
Buyers can choose between two battery options: a 37 kWh battery providing approximately 312 km (194 miles) of range, and a 52 kWh battery offering up to 436 km (271 miles). Testing has shown an average consumption of 13.5 kWh/100 km, translating to a real-world range of around 385 km (239 miles).
The larger battery supports DC fast charging up to 105 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in approximately 24 minutes.
Technology and Interior
The ID. Cross incorporates modern driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control that recognizes traffic lights and automatically applies the brakes. A one-pedal driving system with strong regenerative braking allows for near-exclusive use of the accelerator pedal for both acceleration, and deceleration.
Inside, the vehicle features a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel. Volkswagen is as well introducing retro design elements, offering screen graphics inspired by classic models like the 1980s Golf and vintage cassette players. Notably, the company is reintroducing physical buttons for steering wheel controls and climate functions, addressing previous criticisms of touch-sensitive sliders.
Pricing and Dimensions
The ID. Cross is expected to start below €28,000 (approximately $30,000 USD as of March 17, 2026). With a length of 4.15 meters (13.6 feet), it offers more interior space than the petrol-powered T-Cross. The trunk provides 475 liters (16.8 cubic feet) of storage, with an additional 22-liter (0.8 cubic feet) compartment under the front hood.
Future Outlook
The ID. Cross is slated for launch in the European market in autumn 2026. It represents Volkswagen’s commitment to providing affordable and accessible electric mobility options, building upon its position as a leading electric vehicle provider in Germany and Europe. Volkswagen has also announced plans for three other small electric models – the ID.2 all, ID. GTI Concept, and ID. EVERY1 – all scheduled for release from 2026 onwards.
Volkswagen Group presented the ID. CROSS Concept at IAA MOBILITY in Munich in September 2025.
