Cancer Council WA Launches New Campaign: Cut Back on Sugary Drinks This Summer

Cancer Council WA has relaunched the LiveLighter 13 Cancers campaign, urging West Australians to cut back on sugary drinks as summer heats up. Research shows that nearly a quarter of West Australians (31%) consume sugary drinks three or more times per week, raising concerns about the potential health risks associated with excessive sugar intake.

Ainslie Sartori, Food and Movement Manager at Cancer Council WA, emphasizes the connection between sugary drinks, weight gain, obesity, and increased cancer risk.

“Cutting down on sugary drinks is one of the simplest ways to lower your cancer risk,” Sartori explains. “A single 600mL bottle of soft drink contains a staggering 16 teaspoons of sugar. This campaign aims to expose the hidden truth about sugary drinks and inspire West Australians to choose healthier alternatives.”

According to Sartori, with over one in five (21%) West Australian adults drinking one liter or more of sugary drinks weekly, LiveLighter encourages individuals to swap sugary beverages for water. She highlights water’s benefits:

“Water is the healthiest choice. It’s sugar-free, kilojoule-free, and practically free from the tap. Adding a squeeze of citrus or a sprig of mint can elevate its refreshing taste. Low-sugar drinks with less than 2.5g of sugar per 100mL provide variety.

“For occasional sweet drinks, opt for options with less than 5g of sugar per 100mL. Remember, a regular soft drink has about twice that amount, so switching could halve your sugar intake.”

Sartori emphasizes that reducing sugary drink consumption contributes to better health, savings, and environmental sustainability.

The 13 Cancers campaign runs across various platforms, including TV, online, and social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. LiveLighter is funded by the WA Department of Health and managed by Cancer Council WA.
