Canada Defeats Wales in Swansea Pleasant

Wales suffered a 1-0 defeat at home against Canada in a fiery friendly match played in Swansea. It marked Craig Bellamy’s first loss as Wales manager.

Derek Cornelius, recently signed by Rangers, scored the decisive goal. He headed in a free-kick from 25 yards past Wales goalkeeper Adam Davies just before halftime. Canada truly deserved the win.

The match wasn’t exactly friendly. Referee Robert Jones issued eight yellow cards, and both teams were guilty of aggressive play at times.

Bellamy had a strong record coming into the game, winning 54.5% of his 11 matches in charge – the best percentage of any permanent Welsh manager. His only previous loss was a World Cup qualifier in Belgium.

Wales were lucky the score wasn’t worse. Canada hit the woodwork twice and missed several other chances to score.

This was Wales’ first game in Swansea since a Covid-era contest in 2020, and the first in front of a crowd in 12 years. Bellamy made meaningful changes to the lineup after a grueling 7,000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan.

Kieffer Moore’s winning goal had boosted Welsh hopes of topping their World Cup qualifying group.Though, Moore was one of eight players rested, while captain Ben Davies, Neco Williams, and Harry Wilson all started.
