Waterford Councillor Calls for Improved Signage on N25 Following Speed Camera Fines

A Waterford City & County Councillor is advocating for clearer signage on the N25 near a speed camera, citing concerns that drivers are unknowingly exceeding the speed limit and receiving fines. Councillor Niamh O’Donovan raised the issue at a recent plenary meeting, highlighting the potential for confusion due to a speed limit change.

Speed Limit Discrepancy Concerns

According to Cllr. O’Donovan, the speed limit on the N25 transitions from 100 kilometres per hour to 80 kilometres per hour without sufficient warning, particularly for drivers travelling from Wexford into Waterford. She argues that the open road conditions can make it difficult for motorists to recognize the reduced speed zone in time, leading to unintentional violations and subsequent fines. Drivers are being “caught out” as a result of the inadequate signage.

Council Response and Driver Responsibility

Gabriel Hynes, Director of Services for Roads at Waterford City & County Council, acknowledged the concerns but emphasized that drivers are ultimately responsible for adhering to posted speed limits. Hynes stated that speed limits are in place to ensure road safety and protect all users. He also noted that he does not condone drivers receiving fines for speeding, but stressed the importance of driver awareness and adjustment to changing speed conditions.

Call for Action and Road Safety

Cllr. O’Donovan is urging the council to address the signage issue, believing that clearer warnings would help drivers recognize speed changes and avoid penalties. The situation underscores broader concerns about road safety and driver awareness on this frequently travelled route.
