Waterford experiences sharp decline in new car registrations for 2024.
Waterford saw the biggest drop in new car registrations nationwide in 2024, according to figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). While overall new car registrations in Ireland dipped slightly by 1% compared to 2023, Waterford saw a significant 8% decrease.
A total of 2,533 new cars were registered in Waterford in 2024, compared to 2,753 in the previous year. This represents the largest decline amongst all Irish counties.
Nationwide, the Irish automotive market witnessed a slight overall decrease, with 121,195 new cars registered in 2024. However, the shift towards electric vehicles slowed, with 17,459 new electric cars registered, representing a 23.6% drop from 2023’s figures.
Despite the decline, the popularity of certain brands remained consistent. The top five selling new car brands in Ireland for 2024 were:

- VOLKSWAGEN
- SKODA
- HYUNDAI
- KIA
