Sports Viewership Surges: WBC, Paralympics, and College Sports Draw Record Numbers
Recent data reveals significant growth in viewership across several major sporting events, signaling a robust appetite for live sports content. From baseball’s World Baseball Classic to the Winter Paralympics and key college sports matchups, audiences are tuning in at record levels, driven by compelling competition and expanded digital access.
World Baseball Classic Shatters Viewership Records
Venezuela’s historic victory over the United States in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) captivated a record-breaking average audience of 10.78 million viewers on Fox. ESPN reports that 10.23 million viewers watched on the main Fox network, with an additional 550,000 tuning in on Fox Deportes. This surpassed the previous tournament record set by the 2026 semi-final between the US and the Dominican Republic, which averaged 7.37 million on FS1. The final also more than doubled the viewership of the 2023 WBC final, which averaged 4.97 million across FS1 and Fox Deportes.
The WBC final’s performance was comparable to Major League Baseball’s World Series, even exceeding the average viewership of the five-game 2023 World Series.
Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics Achieve Record US Viewership
The Milan-Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games achieved unprecedented viewership in the United States, attracting 22.7 million total viewers across NBC, USA Network, and CNBC. This represents a 90% increase compared to the previous Winter Paralympics in Beijing. NBC Chicago highlights that this figure is also 47% higher than the Paris 2024 Paralympic Summer Games, which garnered 15.4 million viewers.
The Games also saw a significant boost in digital streaming, with 99.4 million minutes streamed across digital platforms – five times the streaming viewership of the Beijing Paralympics. A primetime broadcast on NBC and Peacock averaged 1.4 million viewers, marking the most-watched Winter Paralympic Games broadcast on record.
College Basketball and Other Sports Witness Viewership Gains
US men’s college basketball games averaged 433,000 viewers during the 2025/26 regular season, a 19% year-over-year increase. Duke’s Thanksgiving win over Arkansas on CBS drew the largest audience with 6.81 million viewers, and CBS led all networks with an average of 1.59 million viewers. Women’s college basketball also experienced growth, averaging 238,000 viewers, a 2% increase year-over-year. ABC’s coverage of South Carolina-LSU attracted 1.7 million viewers, whereas Fox averaged 700,000 viewers throughout the campaign.
Other sporting events also saw strong viewership numbers: the final round of the Players Championship averaged 4.4 million viewers on NBC and Peacock, the France-England Six Nations match drew eight million viewers on France Televisions and 3.9 million on ITV, and the inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix of Arlington averaged 1.34 million viewers on Fox. However, NASCAR’s Cup Series race in Las Vegas saw a slight decrease, averaging 2.77 million viewers on FS1, down 8.6% from the previous year.
Looking Ahead
The consistent growth in viewership across these diverse sporting events underscores the enduring appeal of live sports. As media consumption habits evolve, broadcasters and leagues are finding success in reaching wider audiences through both traditional television and digital platforms. The increasing popularity of events like the Paralympics suggests a growing interest in inclusive sports coverage, while the strong performance of college basketball highlights the continued relevance of amateur athletics.
