Wegovy weight-loss pill now available in UK pharmacies, but not on NHS

A daily oral version of the weight-loss medication semaglutide, marketed as the Wegovy pill, is now available through private prescription at various UK pharmacies. While the drug shares the same active ingredient as the injectable Wegovy, it is currently excluded from the National Health Service (NHS) formulary and must be sourced through private consultations.

Strict Protocols for Daily Dosing

Unlike the weekly Wegovy injection, the oral version of semaglutide is a daily tablet. Simple Online Pharmacy warns that the medication requires specific administration to ensure efficacy. Patients must take the pill on an empty stomach after an eight-hour fast, using only a small sip of water. Following ingestion, they must wait at least 30 minutes before consuming any other food, liquids, or additional medications.

Strict Protocols for Daily Dosing

Abdal Alvi, chief clinical officer at Simple Online Pharmacy, noted that the medication’s absorption is directly tied to this strict routine, making adherence essential from the first day of treatment.

Private Market Pricing Disparities

Access is currently limited to the private sector. Costs fluctuate based on dosage and the pharmacy provider. A one-month supply ranges from £69 for lower doses—often bundled into three-month plans—up to £189 for higher doses. For comparison, private providers list monthly costs for Wegovy injections between £79 and £250, while Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro injections range from £54 to £300 per month.

Clinical Outcomes and Side Effects

Clinical trials suggest the daily tablet is effective for weight management. Data indicates patients taking the 25mg daily dose lost between 14% and 17% of their body weight over a 64-week period, contingent upon strict adherence. Common side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises that any patient experiencing adverse effects should report them via the Yellow Card scheme and consult a healthcare professional.

The Threat of Illicit Online Vendors

The expansion of private online access has triggered warnings regarding unverified sources. Megan Rannard of the intellectual property law firm Marks & Clerk cautioned that numerous websites falsely claim to be legitimate pharmacies. These illicit sites often advertise medication at exceptionally low prices without requiring a medical consultation or prescription. Consumers face significant health risks from counterfeit pharmaceuticals, which may also serve as fronts for phishing or financial fraud.

An Expanding Landscape of Weight-Loss Tools

The oral tablet provides an alternative for those who prefer to avoid injectable treatments, particularly travelers or those with needle phobia. It joins a growing market that saw Eli Lilly introduce its own oral candidate, orforglipron (marketed as Foundayo), in early April. As with all prescription weight-loss medications, the oral semaglutide tablet is intended for use alongside a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Patients are encouraged to verify the legitimacy of any online pharmacy through official regulatory registers before initiating treatment.
