Wellens Secures Clásica Jaén Victory with Daring Solo Attack

Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) claimed victory at the Clásica Jaén on Monday, executing a masterful solo attack over 54 kilometers from the finish line. The Belgian champion’s strategic ride, supported by his team, proved decisive, though he faced a late challenge from Tom Pidcock.

A Long-Range Attack Pays Off

Wellens launched his attack with 54 kilometers remaining in the race, capitalizing on the challenging gravel sectors that characterize the Clásica Jaén, often dubbed the “Spanish Strade Bianche.” UAE Team Emirates-XRG effectively controlled the pace behind him, neutralizing any significant threats from the chasing pack.

Pidcock Mounts a Late Challenge

While Wellens appeared to be cruising to a comfortable victory, Tom Pidcock began to close the gap in the final stages of the race. Pidcock, considered a pre-race favorite, had missed the initial crucial splits but managed to bridge to the leading group. He launched a three-rider move within the last 10 kilometers, but it proved too late to overhaul Wellens.

UAE Team Emirates Dominance

Wellens’ teammate, Jan Christen, played a key role in thwarting Pidcock’s late surge, ensuring the victory for UAE Team Emirates-XRG. Christen ultimately secured third place on the podium, completing a 1-3 finish for the team. Maxim van Gils (Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe) also contested the sprint but crashed, finishing shaken but able to ride to the finish line.

A Career 42nd Victory for Wellens

Wellens navigated a near-disaster late in the race, recovering from a slide on a fast, stony corner. He ultimately crossed the finish line 35 seconds ahead of Pidcock, securing his 42nd career victory. This win marks the 12th season victory for UAE Team Emirates-XRG in 2026.

UAE Emirates’ Early Season Success

This victory comes on the same day as Isaac del Toro’s win at the UAE Tour, highlighting UAE Emirates-XRG’s strong start to the 2026 season. The team has now secured 12 wins with 8 different riders in just six weeks of racing, even before Tadej Pogačar begins his campaign. Having broken the single-season win record last year with 97 victories, the team is aiming for a triple-digit win total in 2026.
