A Designer’s Rhythm: Balancing Creativity and Wellbeing
The life of a designer often appears glamorous, filled with runway shows and artistic expression. However, the reality is a carefully orchestrated blend of focused work, personal reflection, and a commitment to wellbeing. For many, like myself, finding that balance is key to sustained creativity and fulfillment. While my earlier years were characterized by a relentless pace, I now prioritize a more measured approach, cherishing quiet moments and mindful routines.
The Morning Ritual: Setting Intentions and Cultivating inspiration
My typical Saturday begins around 8:45 am. The first priority is always checking on my family, ensuring everyone is rested and ready for the day. This is followed by a personal check-in – a moment to ground myself and assess my own needs.
I dedicate time each morning to affirmations and intention-setting. This practice helps to clarify my goals and approach the day with purpose. Then, with a warm drink in hand, I retreat to my home studio. This hour is sacred – a time for reviewing designs, refining my inspiration boards, and selecting fabrics. It’s a meticulous process, ensuring the final product accurately reflects my artistic vision, notably in the intricate details of pattern and texture.
Currently, the fashion industry is seeing a 7.5% annual growth rate, with sustainable and ethically sourced materials becoming increasingly vital to consumers (source: Statista, 2024). This trend reinforces my commitment to thoughtful design and responsible production.
Finding Flow: From Breakfast to the Studio
While a leisurely brunch is preferred, Saturday mornings often call for a swift and nourishing breakfast. A cup of coffee or tea alongside berries and a bagel provides the fuel needed to transition into work. The simple act of enjoying a bagel evokes fond memories of my time living in Queens, New York, where fresh-baked bagels were a daily indulgence.
Following breakfast, I embark on a 25-minute walk to my shop, Studio Emerald, located within the Anu Wellness Hub in Barna, County Galway. This walk isn’t merely transportation; it’s an essential part of my daily routine. If my schedule doesn’t allow for a morning walk,I make sure to take my dog for a stroll later in the day. This provides much-needed exercise and a valuable prospect to disconnect from the demands of work.
Nature’s Palette: Inspiration in the Irish Landscape
I consistently find that immersion in nature is a powerful catalyst for creativity. The diverse flora of the Irish countryside, especially the native wildflowers, provides endless inspiration. It was during one of these walks that the idea to combine customary Irish tweed with vibrant African print fabrics first sparked.
Living in the West of Ireland is a privilege. The proximity to both the rugged coastline and the serene boglands offers a constant source of wonder and artistic stimulus. The interplay of textures, colors, and forms found in the natural world directly informs my design process. This connection to the landscape is not just aesthetic; it’s a basic part of my brand identity, reflecting a deep respect for heritage and the environment.
