Wexford County Council Debates Domestic Violence Training for Councillors and Staff
Wexford County Council recently held a debate regarding mandatory training for councillors and staff on recognizing domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence. The discussion, initiated by Councillor Vicky Barron, highlighted the importance of understanding consent and addressing online abuse.
Call for Training and Discussion on Consent
Councillor Vicky Barron, Chairperson of Wexford Women’s Refuge, raised the issue during a council meeting, referencing a motion she co-submitted with Councillor Bridín Murphy in November. She emphasized the need for councillors to receive training on identifying domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence, extending the training to all Wexford County Council (WCC) staff. Barron underscored the importance of understanding the legal definition of assault and sexual assault, stating, “It is not okay to touch anyone, the legal definition of assault is touching anyone without consent.”
Debate and Adjournment
Barron’s comments were met with some disapproval, with Councillor Sullivan questioning whether she was straying from the current topic. Despite initial resistance, Barron was allowed to continue, reiterating her request for training and emphasizing the need for a clear understanding of ethical boundaries, particularly in various meeting locations. Following her remarks, Councillor Sullivan adjourned the meeting for ten minutes to consult with party whips.
Continued Advocacy and Council Response
Upon resuming the meeting, Barron continued to advocate for the motion, stressing that consent applies to both men and women and that the council should demonstrate transparency in all its dealings. Councillor Sullivan acknowledged her points, and the meeting proceeded.
