Why AI Consciousness Is So Hard to Pin Down
- we may never know if AI is truly conscious. A philosopher who studies consciousness says the most honest position is to admit we don’t know. There’s no reliable way to tell if a machine is aware, and that might not change.
- This uncertainty can lead to exaggeration. Tech companies might use the lack of proof to promote AI as being more advanced than it is, even if it isn’t truly conscious.
- Believing machines can feel carries risks. Forming emotional connections based on the idea that AI is conscious, when it isn’t, could be harmful.
A philosopher at the university of Cambridge says we don’t have the evidence needed to decide if artificial intelligence can become conscious, or when. Dr. Tom McClelland explains that we don’t have the tools to test for machine consciousness, and it’s unlikely we will soon.
As the idea of artificial consciousness moves from science fiction to real ethical debates, McClelland argues that uncertainty is the most reasonable approach. He believes agnosticism is the only defensible position because we can’t reliably know if an AI system is truly conscious, and this uncertainty could continue indefinitely.
Consciousness vs Sentience in AI Ethics
Discussions about AI rights often focus on consciousness, but McClelland says awareness isn’t the only thing that matters ethically. What’s truly significant is sentience – the ability to feel pleasure or pain.
“Consciousness would mean AI develops perception and becomes self-aware, but this can be neutral,” said McClelland, from Cambridge’s Department of History and Ideology of Science.
“Sentience involves conscious experiences that are good or bad, which is what makes an entity capable of suffering or enjoyment. This is when ethics become important,” he said. “Even if we accidentally create conscious AI, it’s unlikely to be the kind of consciousness we need to worry about.”
He explains the difference with an example. A self-driving car that understands its surroundings would be a great achievement, but it wouldn’t raise ethical concerns. Though, if that system started to feel emotional about where it was going, that would be different.
big Investments and Big Claims About AI
technology companies are investing a lot of money in Artificial General Intelligence, systems designed to match human thinking. Some researchers and industry leaders claim that conscious AI could arrive soon.
