Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Law Banning Local DEI Programs, Claims White Men Face Discrimination

On Wednesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law that prohibits local governments in the state from funding or promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The legislation, signed during a press conference in Jacksonville, marks the latest effort by the governor to challenge what he describes as discriminatory practices against white males through DEI programs.

During the announcement, DeSantis asserted that white men have been subjected to discrimination under current DEI frameworks. “The disfavored groups, No. 1, obviously, would be white males, and I feel they’ve been discriminated against,” he said. He characterized DEI as “an ideological construct that is designed to promote a particular political agenda, particularly to the detriment of disfavored groups.”

The new law empowers residents to sue local governments for violations and allows for the removal from office of individual officials found to have funded or promoted DEI initiatives. DeSantis framed the move as part of a broader stance against “woke” ideology, declaring, “We are, of course, the state where woke goes to die.”

The legislation builds on prior efforts by the DeSantis administration to restrict DEI in public institutions, including Florida’s public universities and colleges. Critics, however, argue that DEI programs are intended to address systemic inequities and historical discrimination faced by marginalized communities.

Evelyn Foxx, president of the NAACP branch in Gainesville, countered the governor’s claims, stating that his perspective does not reflect the experiences of most white men. “If you talked to 100 white men, they wouldn’t feel the same way” as DeSantis, Foxx said in an interview with the Associated Press. “The governor is out of touch with people, and that is the bottom line.”

Supporters of the law maintain that it prevents local governments from allocating taxpayer funds toward what they view as politicized or divisive initiatives. Opponents warn that the measure undermines efforts to foster inclusive workplaces and educational environments.

The signing took place amid a national trend in which several states have introduced or enacted legislation limiting DEI activities in government, education, and corporate settings. DeSantis has positioned himself as a leading figure in the conservative movement against what he terms “woke” policies.

As of the date of signing, the law is now in effect, prohibiting counties and municipalities across Florida from using public resources to support DEI-related programming, training, or outreach efforts.
