lingering Inflation: Why Some Economies Still Feel the Pinch

The Yiddish phrase “farshlepteh krenk”-roughly translating to a persistent, nagging illness-aptly describes the experience of inflation in several developed economies. While the surge in prices that characterized 2022 has subsided, a complete return to price stability remains elusive for many, particularly within Anglophone countries.

Inflation across the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Progress (OECD) peaked at nearly 11% in 2022, levels not seen since the 1970s.By June of this year, average inflation across the OECD had fallen to around 2.5%, edging close to the target rates set by most central banks. However, this overall improvement masks a more complex reality, as certain nations continue to grapple with stubbornly high inflation. This ongoing struggle raises questions about the underlying causes and the appropriate policy responses needed to achieve lasting price stability.
