In the fall, many try to “strengthen the immune system” to avoid colds, but, according to American therapist Tim Hendricks, these efforts are most frequently enough in vain. The reason is not weak immunity, but constant contact with viruses. He spoke about this in an interview with HuffPost.
Hendricks, chief physician of the AdventHealth Centra Care emergency clinic network (USA), emphasized: most peopel get colds not as they have a weakened immune system, but because of a simple failure to comply with basic rules of hygiene and living in conditions where viruses are transmitted especially actively.
“The only exception is patients with immunodeficiency, such as, after cancer treatment, lupus or Crohn’s disease. As a rule, they know about this from their doctors,” he said.
The doctor noted that members of large families, as well as parents of small children, are especially at risk. The latter are more often infected with cold viruses, as they attend kindergartens and schools – environments with a high viral load. In addition, teachers, medical workers and residents of apartment buildings are at risk.
For prevention, Hendricks advises: wash your hands more frequently enough, do not touch your face with your hands, avoid crowds of people and watch your diet.According to him, these simple measures work more effectively than attempts to “strengthen the immune system” with the help of dietary supplements and vitamins.
The topic of “strengthening the immune system” traditionally becomes popular in the autumn-winter season. In recent years, experts and doctors are increasingly drawing attention to the fact that the main protection against viruses remains not supplements and folk remedies, but hygiene, good sleep and a healthy diet.
