The Lure of Big Cities: Why Kalundborg’s Youth Dream of Leaving

Nestled in the heart of Denmark, Kalundborg boasts stunning natural beauty and a vibrant community. However, beneath the idyllic surface lies a growing concern: a brain drain fueled by limited opportunities.

A Culture of Low Expectations?

Regional councillor Helle Laursen Petersen paints a stark picture. “If you saw that, you will take one of the big cities around here and say, ‘Well, we will live there and then I can drive to Kalundborg to work,'” she explains.

Petersen underscores the struggle local schools face in attracting experienced teachers. This, in turn, contributes to a sense of low expectation among parents who believe their children will inevitably land jobs at the Novo Nordisk factory, rendering higher education unnecessary.

The Yearning for Urban Expansion

For students like Ali, Anna K, Anna, and Marie at Gymnasium, the most academic secondary school in the region, the desire to leave Kalundborg for university is strong.
“It might become interesting later, but as of now, I think it’s a bit too boring to settle down here – I think I’d like a larger city,” shares Anna K.

Returning with Hope

While others dream of escaping Kalundborg’s confines, Ali and Marie express a longing to return after their studies. “This is where they are from, and they want to contribute to the development of their hometown,” says Petersen.

They envision a future with more diverse job opportunities, allowing them to fully appreciate the natural beauty that Kalundborg offers.

The exodus of young talent poses a significant challenge for Kalundborg’s future. How can the town retain its brightest minds and cultivate a thriving community for generations to come?
