€3 Million to Restore Ireland’s Peatlands,Wicklow Site First in Line

Some €3 million is to be spent on peatlands restoration across Ireland, with a site in wicklow first to be considered after considerable work by local volunteers.[Image of peatland landscape]

the funding will contribute to the ambitious goal of restoring 127,000 hectares of peatlands by 2030, as outlined in Ireland’s national Peatlands Strategy. Peatlands are vital ecosystems, acting as significant carbon sinks and supporting unique biodiversity. However, decades of drainage and extraction have degraded many of these areas, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere and diminishing their ecological value. The Wicklow site was selected due to the dedication of local volunteers who have already undertaken considerable preparatory work. This includes blocking drainage ditches to rewet the peatland, a crucial step in restoring its natural function.

“Rewetting peatlands is essential for reducing carbon emissions, improving water quality, and enhancing biodiversity,” explained a spokesperson for the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications. “The work in Wicklow demonstrates the power of community involvement in achieving our climate action goals.”

The restoration project will involve a range of measures, including ditch blocking, vegetation management, and the removal of invasive species. It is expected to create local employment opportunities and boost ecotourism in the region.
