Alex Yee finally claimed the World Triathlon Championship title in Torremolinos, Spain, after coming agonizingly close in previous years. The Olympic champion delivered a masterful performance, overcoming a challenging bike leg to secure victory and cement his place as the world’s best.

Yee entered Sunday’s race knowing a top-six finish would secure him the title. However, rivals Hayden Wilde and Leo Bergere dominated the bike leg, creating a significant gap. Undeterred, Yee unleashed a blistering run, steadily closing the distance and ultimately securing the bronze medal. Wilde, meanwhile, produced the race of his career, winning gold by a minute ahead of Bergere, who took silver.

Yee’s Triumph: Years in the Making

“I was proud to be part of that. Getting out of T1 I wasn’t in the best position or the best legs to get out. These boys are the strongest in the game and if they go you’re in danger, and I just had to play to my strengths and bike as hard as I could and run as hard as I could. This has evaded me for the last three years and makes it even sweeter. It is probably something that has haunted me day in day out and I wanted to put on a show and a smile on peoples’ faces and I’m World Champion. There’s always going to be pressure in these races… but pressure makes diamonds,” Yee said, visibly elated.

A Thrilling Race From Start to Finish

The race unfolded with Matthew Hauser setting the early pace in the swim, followed closely by a chasing pack that included Yee, Wilde, and Bergere. Hauser’s dominance was short-lived, however, as Bergere and Wilde launched a powerful attack on the bike, quickly establishing a significant lead. Yee remained focused, diligently chasing the leaders, knowing that securing a top-six finish was crucial for his title aspirations.

Wilde’s blistering pace proved unstoppable, allowing him to secure gold. Bergere, despite a valiant effort, settled for silver, while Yee’s consistent performance earned him bronze. Dorian Coninx, Pierre Le Corre, Csongor Lehmann, Tayler Reid, Vincent Luis, and Tyler Mislawchuk rounded out the top ten.

Hayden Wilde’s victory marked a remarkable achievement, showcasing his exceptional talent and determination. Leo Bergere’s consistent performance throughout the season secured him silver, while Alex Yee’s triumph after years of striving solidified his position as a force to be reckoned with.
