Will $100 Games Save the Industry? Indiana Jones Author Warns About Losing Players

Amid rumors that future GTA 6 level hits could cost up to $100, Machine Games studio’s Yerk Gustafsson has joined the debate.

The developer of the new Indiana Jones game and the Wolfenstein series believes that continuing to raise prices is not the solution to the problem of the growing budgets of AAA projects. According to him, exceeding new price thresholds will only lead to a reduction in the audience. This, in Gustafsson’s opinion, has already been demonstrated by the moderate market reaction to attempts to set a price of $80 for certain games on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox.

Instead of raising prices, Gustafsson proposes focusing on optimizing internal processes. The key factors he mentions are increased efficiency, more thoughtful marketing and active use of existing brands. Remakes and remasters, according to him, make it possible to finance new, more risky projects without drastically increasing the cost of the games. At Machine Games they are already applying this approach, paying attention to the conservation of resources and precise control of the scale of development.

Despite the current difficulties in the industry, the Machine Games boss remains optimistic. Gustafsson believes that the gaming market will continue to grow, as the first generation that grew up with a gamepad in their hands is still far from retirement age.
