Willie Anderson to Undergo Kidney Transplant, Remains Hall of Fame Finalist

Cincinnati Bengals legend Willie Anderson announced on Friday night that he is scheduled to undergo a kidney transplant on March 3 in Atlanta, Georgia. The former offensive tackle, a five-time Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist, shared the news in a social media video, hoping to inspire others.

Diagnosis and Road to Transplant

Anderson was diagnosed with kidney disease approximately 10 years ago, at the age of 40. He had previously been diagnosed with high blood pressure in his late 30s, around the ages of 38 or 39. While he initially managed his condition, his health declined over the past two years, leading him to seek evaluation at Emory University and Duke University, where he was placed on transplant lists.

A Family Match

Remarkably, Anderson’s wife was found to be a perfect donor match. “My girl wanted to check and see for herself,” Anderson said. “She was a perfect match. Crazy. Never in a million years did I think that I would be in this position of needing a kidney and going through a transplant. Two, I never thought someone this close to me in this aspect would be the one that I would receive a kidney from.”

Gratitude and Future Plans

Anderson expressed gratitude for the support of his family, friends and faith. He is looking forward to returning to coaching and continuing his work with the Willie Anderson Lineman Academy, where he trains high school football players.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Pursuit

Despite his health challenges, Anderson remains a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026. He has been a modern-era player finalist for five consecutive years. He was originally selected No. 10 overall in the 1996 NFL Draft by the Bengals and played in 195 games, starting 184. During his career, he allowed only 16 sacks.

Anderson acknowledged the strong support of Bengals fans in his Hall of Fame candidacy, stating, “I’ll be so happy more for the fans of the Bengals…I don’t believe I get pushed forward as much as a finalist if our fans weren’t out there fighting for me.”
