HOUSTON, TX – January 6, 2026 – For nearly a century, the vision of space exploration has been fueled by the imaginations of engineers, astronauts, and pioneering thinkers. Few individuals have shaped this dream as profoundly as Willy Ley, a visionary science writer, early rocketry advocate, and a key voice in defining the potential of the Space Age.

In 2026, Ley’s vision will reach a remarkable new milestone.

Celestis, Inc. has announced that a symbolic portion of Willy Ley’s cremated remains will be launched aboard the Serenity Flight, a memorial mission to earth orbit, and also aboard Destiny Flight, an upcoming lunar mission. This dual launch serves as a unique tribute to Ley’s life work: transforming spaceflight from a theoretical possibility into a tangible expectation. Celestis is a leader in memorial spaceflight services.

A Legacy Built on Imagination, Science, and Courage

Born in Berlin in 1906, Willy Ley was a founding member of the Verein für Raumschiffahrt (VfR), an early amateur rocketry society whose innovative ideas laid the groundwork for modern aerospace engineering. Fleeing Nazi Germany in 1935, Ley immigrated to the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen and one of the nation’s most influential science communicators.

His landmark 1949 book, The Conquest of Space, featuring striking futuristic illustrations, inspired a generation of scientists and engineers who would go on to build NASA, design spacecraft, and ultimately land humans on the Moon. Ley’s writing appeared in prominent publications of the era, bringing the concept of space travel into the homes of millions long before the first rockets launched from Cape Canaveral.

A crater on the far side of the Moon is named in his honor. He passed away in June 1969, just weeks before the Apollo 11 mission fulfilled the vision he had so passionately championed.

In early 2025, Ley’s cremated remains were unexpectedly rediscovered in a Manhattan apartment building, sparking renewed interest in his life and contributions. This revelation underscored how easily foundational figures can be overlooked, even as their ideas continue to shape our world.

For Celestis, this rediscovery presented an opportunity to create a fitting tribute: sending Ley into Earth orbit and onward to the Moon, aboard missions that embody the future he envisioned.

Serenity and Destiny: A Tribute Beyond Earth

The Serenity Flight will carry a symbolic portion of Ley’s remains into Earth orbit alongside other individuals who share a passion for exploration, legacy, and remembrance. Like all Celestis orbital missions, the spacecraft will circle Earth for months or years before its natural atmospheric reentry, offering a poetic and lasting farewell.

Destiny Flight will transport a portion of Ley’s remains to the Moon, where they will remain permanently, representing a historic return for one of spaceflight’s earliest advocates to the celestial body he helped make accessible to humanity.

Celestis will host multi-day memorial events, mission briefings, and launch-viewing experiences for participating families.

For Willy Ley, these flights are more than symbolic gestures; they represent a continuation of the story he helped begin.

Be Part of These Historic Missions

Reservations are now open for both Serenity Flight and Destiny Flight. Individuals and families who feel a connection to Ley’s legacy, or who share his passion for the cosmos, are invited to participate in these historic missions.
