Lisa Hauser Announces Retirement from Biathlon

Austrian biathlete Lisa-Theresa Hauser has announced her retirement from the sport at the age of 32, bringing an complete to a distinguished career that spanned over a decade. Hauser will compete for the last time at the World Cup final in Oslo-Holmenkollen, Norway, this week.

A Career Defined by Dedication and Success

Hauser made her World Cup debut in December 2012 in Hochfilzen, Austria, and quickly became a mainstay of the Austrian national team. She carried the responsibility of representing Austrian women’s biathlon for many years, consistently delivering strong performances on the international stage. Throughout her career, Hauser competed in 384 World Cup races.

Peak Performance and World Championship Glory

The 2020/2021 season marked the pinnacle of Hauser’s career. She achieved her greatest success at the 2021 World Championships in Pokljuka, Slovenia, winning gold in the mass start competition – the most significant achievement for Austrian women’s biathlon to date. She also secured silver medals in the pursuit and mixed relay at the same championships. That season, she also won the overall victory in the individual World Cup.

Continued Success and a Decorated Record

Hauser continued to add to her accolades, securing six individual World Cup titles and reaching the podium thirteen times. She participated in four Olympic Games. Her most recent World Cup victory came in December 2023 in the pursuit at Östersund, Sweden, making her one of a select group of biathletes to have won in each of the biathlon disciplines: sprint, pursuit, individual, and mass-start.

A Difficult Decision

Hauser explained that the decision to retire was not made lightly. “It’s not a decision I took overnight, given that biathlon has been a very important part of my life for many years,” she stated. She acknowledged the mental and physical toll of competing at the highest level, noting the energy required to manage the stress and pressure while consistently performing well.

Recognition and Legacy

In 2021, Hauser was honored with a gondola on the Hahnenkammbahn in Kitzbühel, alongside skiing legends, in recognition of her World Championship title. She leaves behind a legacy as a pioneer for Austrian women’s biathlon and a source of inspiration for future generations of athletes.
