The Witcher Remake and The Witcher 4: Development Updates and Creative Decisions

Recent developments surrounding The Witcher franchise reveal a shifting focus for CD Projekt Red, with support from Fool’s Theory extending beyond the remake of the original game to include potential work on The Witcher 4 and possibly new content for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Alongside these developments, insights from original story designer Artur Ganszyniec have shed light on creative decisions made during the development of the first Witcher game.

The Witcher Remake: A Collaborative Effort

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Polish studio Fool’s Theory is leading the development of a remake of the original Witcher game, utilizing Unreal Engine 5. The studio, founded in 2015, previously worked on titles like Seven: The Days Long Gone and has provided development support for games such as Divinity: Baldur’s Gate III and Outriders. Many developers at Fool’s Theory are former CD Projekt Red employees, bringing prior experience to the project.

The Witcher 4: Fool’s Theory Provides Support

CD Projekt Red has temporarily assigned a small team from Fool’s Theory to assist with the development of The Witcher 4, also known as “Project Polaris,” due to shared assets and technology. The Witcher 4 is planned as the first installment in a new trilogy and will feature Ciri as the playable protagonist, a departure from the previous games’ focus on Geralt of Rivia.

Behind the Scenes of the Original Witcher: A Story Designer’s Perspective

Artur Ganszyniec, the lead story designer of the original Witcher game, has been revisiting his work through a YouTube playthrough, offering valuable commentary on the game’s development. A key revelation from his series, specifically in the final episode, concerns a final CG cutscene added to the game without the full involvement of the story team.

Ganszyniec explained that the story team had intended to end the game with an open-ended conclusion, leaving the future uncertain. However, a decision was made – reportedly by the board or CD Projekt Red co-founder Michał Kiciński – to include an animated outro depicting Witchers hunting kings. This cutscene directly set the stage for the events of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Ganszyniec noted that the script for this animation was created largely independently of the story team, influencing the direction of the sequel and shifting its focus away from Geralt’s personal story and history.

Looking Ahead

Despite the past creative differences, Ganszyniec expressed excitement for the upcoming remake. The developments surrounding both the remake and The Witcher 4 signal a significant period for the franchise, with CD Projekt Red leveraging both internal expertise and external support to expand the world of The Witcher for a new generation of players.
