WNBA Playoff Picture: Ranking the contenders after a wild regular season

The 2024 WNBA regular season delivered drama, surprises and a whole lot of star power. Now,with the playoffs here,it’s time to assess the contenders. here’s how our experts rank the teams, from the favorites to those who could make a run:

1. New York Liberty: The Liberty are the team to beat, and it’s not particularly close. They boast arguably the league’s best trio in Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu, and have added depth with the acquisition of Kayla Thornton. They’ve proven they can win at a high level, and their championship experience gives them an edge. The Liberty are elite with all three stars on the court and the addition of emma Meesseman allows coach Sandy Brondello to employ better versions of the big lineups that helped the Liberty outlast Minnesota last October.

2. Las Vegas Aces: The Aces are the defending champions and have been dominant all season long. A’ja Wilson is playing at an MVP level, and the team has a strong supporting cast. Coach Becky Hammon’s decision to bring Jewell Loyd off the bench changes the dynamic of the Aces. The talent drop-off is less significant when they turn to their reserves, who are now led by a player who averaged 24.7 points only two seasons ago. Combine that with Wilson and the momentum this team has built, and it’s easy to see why the Aces are in the championship conversation with the Lynx.

3. Minnesota Lynx: The Lynx have been one of the biggest surprises of the season, led by Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride. They’ve shown they can compete with anyone, and their balanced attack makes them a tough matchup.

4. Connecticut Sun: The Sun are a consistent contender, and DeWanna Bonner continues to be a force. They’re well-coached and have a strong defensive identity.

5. Los Angeles Sparks: The Sparks made a huge leap this season with the addition of Nneka Ogwumike and Jordin canada. They’re a risky team that can score in bunches.

6.Washington Mystics: Despite losing Elena Delle Donne, the Mystics remain a competitive team thanks to the emergence of Shakira Austin and the steady play of Natasha Cloud.

7. Phoenix Mercury: Brittney Griner’s return has given the mercury a boost, and Diana Taurasi is still capable of brilliance. However, they’re still a work in progress.

8. Chicago Sky: The Sky are a young and developing team, but they’ve shown flashes of potential. Marina Mabrey is a rising star.
