World of Warcraft Aims to Revive Classic Dungeon Exploration with Labyrinths
Blizzard Entertainment is looking to recapture the feeling of classic World of Warcraft dungeons with a new feature called Labyrinths, designed to address concerns that the game’s focus on timer-based Mythic+ dungeons has diminished the sense of exploration and discovery. The shift comes as Blizzard seeks to broaden the appeal of the long-running MMO with features like player housing.
The Impact of Mythic+ on Dungeon Design
Associate Game Director Paul Kubit explained that the prominence of Mythic+, WoW’s endlessly scaling dungeons with time constraints, has fundamentally altered how dungeons are designed. “If you remember, back in Classic, we had dungeons like Maraudon, Blackrock Spire and Depths, where we had like 20 bosses in a dungeon,” Kubit said in an interview with PC Gamer [1]. “And that’s not something that happens anymore—dungeons have three or four bosses … And maybe we lost something along the way.”
This shift towards shorter, more focused dungeons has led to a feeling that the “RPG fantasy feeling of getting lost in a sizeable dungeon” has been lost [3]. The emphasis on speed and efficiency in Mythic+ has, according to Kubit, moved away from the “weekend project” of leisurely exploration with friends.
Introducing Labyrinths: A Return to Exploration
Labyrinths, set to release in patch 12.1.5, are intended as a counterpoint to the high-pressure environment of Mythic+. These “mega-Delves” are larger-scale dungeons designed for both solo and group exploration [1]. They aim to provide a more immersive and less time-constrained experience, allowing players to explore sprawling caverns and tackle numerous challenges at their own pace.
According to Kubit, Labyrinths are designed to tap into the emotional appeal of classic dungeon crawling, offering a space where players can “get lost” and enjoy the journey rather than focusing solely on completion time [3].
Looking Ahead
Even as Labyrinths are currently scheduled for release in Autumn, after Blizzcon on September 12th, 2026 [3], the feature represents a significant shift in Blizzard’s approach to dungeon design. The success of Labyrinths will likely indicate whether the studio can successfully recapture the spirit of classic World of Warcraft dungeons for a modern audience.
