XREAL Neo AR Adapter Discontinued Following Performance Issues with Nintendo Switch 2
XREAL has discontinued its Neo accessory, a portable battery pack and AR adapter designed to connect the Nintendo Switch 2 to XREAL’s augmented reality glasses. The decision comes after internal testing revealed performance concerns, specifically frame-rate issues when used with certain games.
Performance Concerns with Metroid Prime 4
According to XREAL, testing with Metroid Prime 4 demonstrated notable frame-rate performance issues that rendered the game unplayable when connected to the XREAL glasses via the Neo adapter. While the Neo functioned reasonably well for outputting the Switch 2’s display, this critical flaw led to the product’s cancellation. XREAL CEO Chi Xu also addressed the situation in a Reddit post, confirming the performance-related concerns were the sole reason for the discontinuation.
Refunds and Credits for Pre-Orders
Customers who pre-ordered the XREAL Neo will receive a full refund, along with a $30 credit applicable to other XREAL products. XREAL clarified that the concerns were performance-related and not safety-related.
XREAL’s AR Ecosystem and Alternatives
The XREAL Neo was designed to be a compact alternative to larger portable Switch docks, such as Viture’s Pro Mobile Dock. However, the Nintendo Switch continues to present compatibility challenges for AR glasses. XREAL is currently developing a higher-end set of AR glasses in collaboration with Asus, geared towards PC and console gaming.
Other handhelds, including the Steam Deck, are more readily compatible with XREAL and other AR glasses from companies like Viture and TCL without requiring additional adapters. Phones, laptops, and tablets also offer seamless integration with XREAL’s AR technology.
Nintendo’s Stance on AR Glass Support
During a launch event in Fresh York last April, Nintendo executives indicated that dedicated support for AR glasses is not currently on the roadmap for the Nintendo Switch 2. This suggests that users seeking an AR gaming experience with their Switch 2 may necessitate to rely on third-party solutions or await potential future developments.
While the XREAL Neo is no longer available, alternative mini-dock options remain on the market. However, the Neo’s compact size was a key selling point, and its future revival remains uncertain.
