Elon Musk’s X Launches ‘Aurora’: A New Photorealistic Image Generator
X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is pushing the boundaries of AI image generation with the launch of “Aurora,” a new tool capable of producing strikingly realistic photographs. Developed by X’s in-house AI team, xAI, Aurora builds on the existing image generation capabilities of Grok, X’s open-weights AI chatbot. While similar to Grok’s previous image generator, Aurora takes the technology to the next level, blurring the lines between reality and AI-generated imagery.
Spotted by TechCrunch, Aurora appears to have few content restrictions. It can generate a wide range of images, from mundane objects to celebrity portraits. The TechCrunch team even managed to elicit images of President-elect Donald Trump with bloodstains on his face and actors Ray Romano and Adam Sandler on set.
Despite its impressive capabilities, Aurora isn’t without limitations. Notably, it appears unable to generate nude images. Furthermore, the tool’s accessibility remains uncertain, with some X users reporting that they can no longer access Aurora.
This launch comes just days after Grok became free for all users, albeit with usage limitations. It remains to be seen how access to Aurora will be managed in the future.
The future of AI-generated deepfakes is a complex and evolving landscape. Jurisdictions worldwide are grappling with the implications of such technology, with some enacting legislation to regulate its use.
X, however, is pushing back against these regulations. CEO Elon Musk has criticized a recently proposed AI bill, claiming it could stifle creative expression and make “parody illegal.” A legal challenge from X hangs over the bill.
With a recent influx of $6 billion in funding and significant investments in supercomputing resources, xAI has the resources to continue pushing the boundaries of AI. Aurora is just the latest example of how X is continuing to innovate in the field of artificial intelligence.
