Antonio Fernandez Arimany Elected as New President of World Triathlon
In a historic move for the sport, Antonio Fernandez Arimany has been elected as the third President of World Triathlon. The announcement came during the 37th Congress of the sport’s world governing body, held in Torremolinos, Spain, following a thrilling week of Championship Finals racing.
Mr. Arimany succeeds Marisol Casado, who steps down after a remarkable 12-year tenure. The new President expressed his excitement for the future, stating: “I am truly honored to accept this responsibility and to lead our beloved sport into a new era. This is an exciting time for triathlon, and I am ready to embrace the challenges ahead. Together, we will work to elevate triathlon to the next level, ensuring that our athletes, coaches, and communities have the support they need to thrive.”
New Leadership Team Takes the Helm
Alongside Mr. Arimany, a new and dynamic Executive Board was elected, bringing a wealth of experience and diverse perspectives to the organization. Gabriela Gallegos (USA), Shin Otsuka (JPN), Antonio Alvarez (MEX), and Debbie Alexander (RSA) were elected Vice Presidents. The remaining four ordinary Board positions were filled by Leslie Buchanan (CAN), Bernard Saint-Jean (FRA), Caterina Vacchi (ITA), and Marco Antonio La Porta (BRA).
A Vision for Growth and Collaboration
Mr. Arimany emphasized the importance of building on the legacy of Marisol Casado and expressed his commitment to working collaboratively with all stakeholders. He said: “Our project is open for everyone, and I would love for everyone to feel part of it.” He pledged to make the necessary changes to further strengthen the organization, stating, “By fostering strong partnerships, we can continue the great governance of our organisation and establish new horizons for the sport. Together, we will create an environment where everyone can succeed and where the spirit of triathlon flourishes.”
Looking Ahead: World Triathlon Events 2025
The Congress also provided a glimpse into the exciting future of triathlon, unveiling the event schedule for 2025. Highlights include the Championship Finals in Wollongong, Australia, the Multisport World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, and a new year’s Championship Series, World Cup, Winter World Championships, Para Triathlon, and eSport events.
