Young Rugby Star Jacob Hardwick Dies in A46 Collision

Leicestershire rugby player Jacob Hardwick, 20, tragically died in a road traffic collision on the A46 in Leicester on Tuesday, February 17th. The promising hooker was on his way to train with the Leicestershire under-20s team when the incident occurred.

Details of the Crash

The collision, involving five vehicles – a Land Rover Defender driven by Hardwick, a lorry, a black Kia Ceed, a blue Volkswagen Sharan, and a Volkswagen Transporter – took place on the southbound carriageway of the A46 near the Beaumont Leys/Anstey junction . Leicestershire Police responded to the scene, and a 53-year-old lorry driver was initially arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving before being released . A man in his 30s sustained life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.

Tributes from the Rugby Community

Hardwick, who played for Southwell RUFC, has been remembered as a talented and popular player with a “heart of gold” . Southwell RUFC announced they would retire his number two shirt for the remainder of the season and hold a minute’s silence in his memory . The club described him as a player who “scored tries from all over the pitch” and possessed a “cheeky sense of humour” .

Leicestershire Rugby Union also paid tribute, stating Hardwick was a “well-loved” member of the county squad, having represented them at both under-18 and senior levels . They expressed condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Prior to joining Southwell RUFC, Jacob played his junior rugby at Syston RFC and Leicester Forest Rugby Club.

Jacob is survived by his brothers, Sam and Ben, and his parents, Ian and Sarah. His passing will leave a significant void in the lives of many .
