The Yayoi Museum of Art has previously hosted two exhibitions centered around the theme of “uniforms.” The first, “Sailor uniforms and schoolgirls: The secrets revealed through illustrations and clothing materials,” took place in 2018. This was followed in the subsequent year by “100 Years of Japanese Uniforms: Schoolgirl Uniforms have Become Pop Culture!” Both exhibitions explored the intersection of uniforms – frequently depicted in visual media like illustrations and manga – with the fashion world and its associated appeal.

Based on exhibition catalogs and online data, the 2018 exhibit featured original artwork by artists such as Yusuke Nakamura, tracing the evolution of the sailor uniform. This uniform originated as attire for sailors in the Royal Navy during the mid-19th century, and its conversion into a popular school uniform is explored.
