Yucatán Hockey Faces Funding Challenges Despite Olympic Qualification

Mérida, Yucatán – The Yucatán State Hockey Association secured crucial funding for transportation to the 2026 National Olympics in Guadalajara, Jalisco, following pressure on the Yucatán State Sports Institute (IDEY).1 However, the association continues to grapple with a lack of consistent training facilities and ongoing financial burdens for its athletes, highlighting systemic challenges in regional sports development.

Transportation Costs Covered, Training Remains a Concern

According to Carlos Pérez, delegate of the association, IDEY agreed to cover the expenses for the under 18 and under 15 men’s teams, as well as the under 15 women’s team, who will represent the state in the upcoming national competition.1 This support addresses an immediate require, but represents the only financial assistance the association has received in the last eight years.1

For six months, the hockey teams have been without a dedicated training field. Previously, they utilized the facilities at the La Inalámbrica Sports Complex, but demand from other sports teams led to the loss of their access.1 This has forced parents to seek and fund alternative training locations.

Financial Strain on Families

Parents have been compelled to raise funds to rent facilities at the Lic. Benito Juárez García Sports Unit, incurring a cost of 500 pesos for two hours of use.1 athletes from municipalities outside of Mérida, such as Hunucmá, face additional expenses of 2,100 pesos per trip for van transportation to training.1 These costs are borne entirely by the families.

Seeking a Permanent Training Solution

The association is currently requesting IDEY to provide a permanent training location, specifically a synthetic grass field measuring 100 by 150 meters.1 As of the latest reports, they are awaiting a response.

IDEY’s Commitment to Sports Development

The Instituto del Deporte del Estado de Yucatán (IDEY) is the state government agency responsible for promoting and supporting sports activities in Yucatán.1 Located at Calle 60 no. 312 x 21 Col. Alcalá Martín, Mérida, Yucatán, the institute can be reached at 942.00.50.1 IDEY has recently collaborated with the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY) to enhance coach training programs for the National Olympics.3 In January, IDEY hosted “El Tazón de la Unión” at La Inalámbrica.1 Cecilia Guadalupe Puc was also recently appointed as director for a day as part of the week scouts 2026.2
