Yuvraj Samra: Canada’s Rising Cricket Star Makes History at T20 World Cup
Yuvraj Singh Samra, a 19-year-old Canadian cricketer, etched his name in the record books at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, becoming the youngest player to score a century in the tournament. His remarkable innings of 110 off 65 balls against New Zealand showcased his talent and potential on the international stage, though Canada ultimately fell to an eight-wicket defeat.
A Historic Century
Samra’s century, achieved on February 17, 2026, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, broke the previous record for the youngest T20 World Cup centurion, previously held by Ahmed Shehzad of Pakistan (22 years and 127 days) who scored his century in 2014 against Bangladesh. He reached the milestone in just 58 balls, surpassing the previous highest score by an associate player – 94 not out by the USA’s Aaron Jones against Canada at the last World Cup.
Early Life and Career
Born on September 29, 2006, in Brampton, Ontario, Samra was introduced to cricket by his father, Baljit Singh, who emigrated to Canada from India. He was named after Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh, a player his father admired. Samra quickly developed a passion for the sport, progressing through local cricket programs and leagues, including the Toronto District Cricket Association (TDCA) and the Brampton & Etobicoke District Cricket League (BEDCL).

He shared a 116-run opening partnership with Canada captain Dilpreet Bajwa. Despite Samra’s outstanding performance, New Zealand chased down the target with 29 balls to spare, securing their place in the Super 8 phase of the tournament. Rachin Ravindra and Phillips were instrumental in the chase, with an unbroken 146-run stand for the third wicket. Phillips top-scored with 76 not out off 36 balls, while Ravindra remained unbeaten with 59 off 39 deliveries.
Looking Ahead
Samra’s performance has marked him as a player to watch in the world of cricket. His historic century demonstrates the growing potential of Canadian cricket and the emergence of talented players from associate nations.
