Zaragoza demands aid after the historic waterspout that caused scenes of "panic and fear" and damages worth millions of euros

The mayoress of Zaragoza, Natalia Chuecahas requested the Government Delegation a meeting of a Local Safety Board as soon as possible to be able to claim aid with which to deal with the damage caused by the torrential storm that this Thursday afternoon unloaded in the Aragonese capital and that at an economic level foresees a cost of “millions of euros”.

Yesterday’s was a “historic storm” of which “there is no precedent”, the Zaragoza mayor told the media after presiding over an extraordinary meeting of the Governing Board to analyze the situation caused by this stormy supercell that also affected Bajo Aragón and other municipalities in the metropolitan area.

The storm came to discharge 46 liters per square meter in one hour in alcanizwith intensities of up to 26.6 liters in ten minutes, equivalent to 166 liters per square meter in one hour, and 54 in the neighborhood of to Valdesparta (Zaragoza) 19.6 in ten minutes, which would be equivalent to 117 l/h, according to the records of the observatories of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and which led the Government of Aragon to activate the Special Civil Protection Plan due to the risk of flooding (Procinar) at level 1 to coordinate the operation.

The intensity of the storm also caused a flood of water and mud in the belt of the Z-30 at the height of the ravine of death which, recalled the mayoress, caused scenes of “panic and fear of people who were trapped in vehicles or clinging to trees” but who “has been left in a sad fright”, since there have been no personal injuries.

In this sense, he has recognized that they have remained “in suspense” until this morning and once it has been verified that there have been no deaths to regret, since there was concern about an elevator in a commercial establishment in Parque Venecia where the garage had was completely drowned out.
