Zohran Mamdani Elected Mayor of New York City
Socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election on November 4, securing just over 50% of the vote (with 93% of votes counted as of this writing). Former governor Andrew cuomo received 41.6% of the vote, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa garnered just over 7%. The Associated Press called the race for Mamdani less than an hour after polls closed in New york City.
Andrew Cuomo conceded defeat to Mamdani, thanking billionaire ex-mayor and campaign donor Michael Bloomberg.
“This campaign contested the philosophies shaping the democratic Party, the future of this city, and the future of this country,” Cuomo stated at his election-night party in Midtown Manhattan. He warned against a “dangerous, dangerous road,” criticizing divisiveness despite facing accusations for running racist advertisements against his opponent.
“Congratulations to zohran Mandami,” Cuomo said, mispronouncing the mayor-elect’s name.
In his victory speech, Mamdani directly addressed Cuomo. “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time I utter his name, as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many and answers only to the few,” he declared to the crowd at his watch party at the Brooklyn Paramount theater.
Mamdani also addressed Donald Trump: “Donald Trump, as I no you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.”
