UK Music Funding Boosts Independent Artists with £1.4 Million Grant
Rising UK music stars are set to receive a significant boost with £1.4 million in funding aimed at elevating British talent on the global stage. The grants will support artists in attracting new fans, generating revenue, and strengthening the UK’s music industry.
Navigating the Streaming Era
The music industry has been fundamentally reshaped by streaming, offering unprecedented global access while simultaneously increasing competition for UK artists. While UK acts currently account for approximately 8-9% of global streams, this is slightly below the recent average of around 10% [UK Music].
The Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS): A Lifeline for Artists
The Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS) provides crucial support to independent UK artists and companies through grants ranging from £5,000 to £50,000. This funding assists artists in breaking into the international music scene after achieving success domestically, helping them build a global fanbase. [UK Music]
MEGS has already supported over 522 British artists and, according to the BPI, has generated an estimated £73.5 million in financial returns for the UK economy over the previous 23 rounds. [UK Music]
2024 Grant Recipients

Government and Industry Support
Business Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized the importance of the scheme, stating, “Streaming has revolutionised access to music for fans worldwide, but it has also created unique challenges for smaller artists and independent labels. This scheme moves the dial for indie music by funding global tours and promotion, removing the financial hurdles which would otherwise prevent our best home-grown talent from blossoming into international success stories.” [UK Music]
He further highlighted the potential for artists to follow in the footsteps of successful MEGS alumni like Ezra Collective and Dave. [UK Music]
UK’s Position in the Global Music Market
The UK is currently the third largest music market globally and the largest in Europe, and the second biggest exporter of recorded music after the U.S. [UK Music] The government is committed to ensuring MEGS reaches artists and companies throughout the UK, with approximately two-thirds of recipients originating from outside London, fostering growth across the country. Economic Impact and Return on Investment
For every pound of government funding, MEGS generates an economic return of £14, alongside significant cultural benefits. Successful acts have received BRIT Award nominations and wins, Mercury Prize shortlists and wins, and amassed hundreds of millions of global streams. [UK Music]
Industry Perspectives
Sophie Jones, BPI Chief Strategy Officer, stated, “In an increasingly competitive global landscape, the Music Export Growth Scheme is a vital springboard for UK artists looking to reach international audiences and build their profiles, and a critical resource for the UK’s SME music businesses and independent sector. It’s also a proven financial success, generating a significant return on investment, and a great example of what can be achieved when industry and Government approach together in support of Britain’s world-class music ecosystem.” [UK Music]
Artist Reactions
Black Country, New Road expressed gratitude for the funding, noting it will help them tour during times of rising costs. The Wellermen highlighted the financial difficulties of touring and emphasized how the funding will enable them to promote their new EP in the USA. Wes Nelson shared his excitement about performing his first European shows with the band, and Nina Nesbitt expressed appreciation for the support as an independent artist releasing through her own label.
